Our digital presentations feature high-resolution images, searchable text, translations, essays, and other special features, all conveniently assembled into Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files for reading and exploration. The following tips will help you make the most of your Octavo Editions.

Adobe Reader / Acrobat Versions and Preferences
Octavo Editions are created as Adobe PDF files, which may be viewed using Adobe Reader or Acrobat. Adobe Reader may be downloaded for free from the Adobe web site; Acrobat is Adobe’s PDF authoring program. While it is advisable to use the most recent update of either program, Octavo Editions are compatible with versions 5.0 and later.

For best results when viewing Octavo Editions, set your Adobe Reader or Acrobat preferences as follows:
1. Open the Preferences (found in the “Adobe Reader” or “Acrobat” menu at the top of screen).
2. In the “General” category (Reader 7 and 6) or the “Options” category (Reader 5), uncheck the “Open cross-document links in same window” box.

Pages Versus Spreads
Octavo Editions are shown as page spreads, as if a book is open before the viewer. Whenever Adobe software references a “page” it is indicating a sequential view of the PDF file and not the page number of the original book shown in the Octavo Edition. To select or print particular pages of the Edition, such as a translation, refer to the page numbers in parentheses at the bottom of the Acrobat interface frame.

Searching Live Text
Some Octavo Editions contains invisible “live” text, so named because it can be selected and copied for use in other applications. Live text, as well as any supplemental content in an Octavo Edition, can be searched for a phrase or word, as follows:

Adobe Reader or Acrobat version 7.0 or 6.0
1. Select “Search” from the “Edit” menu, or click the Search button in Adobe Reader or Acrobat’s toolbar. A “Search PDF” window will appear at the right of screen.
2. Type in your query. Separate multiple words with a space. Click the Search button and wait as the PDF file is searched (this can take some time for larger files); linked results will be displayed in the Search window.

Acrobat Reader or Adobe Acrobat version 5.0
1. Select “Find” from the “Tools” menu, or click the Find button in Acrobat’s toolbar. A “Find” dialog box will appear.
2. Type in your query. Separate multiple words with a space. Click the Find button. The first instance of the searched term will appear highlighted in the document. Click “Find Again” to proceed to the following instance.

Selecting Text
To select introductory or “live text” passages for copying into other applications with Adobe Reader or Acrobat version 7.0 or 6.0, use the Select tool from the toolbar (or choose “Select” from the “Tools” --> “Basic” menu). (In Acrobat 5.0, use the Text Select tool from the toolbar.) Click once on a word to select it, and drag to select a range of text. As you select live text you may notice that it does not always align perfectly with the image of the original book. This is because it is not always possible for Acrobat to perfectly imitate the type positioning of the original. Text copied from Octavo documents is subject to limitations of copyright as applicable.

Selecting Graphics
To select part of an image, choose the Select or Snapshot tool from Acrobat’s toolbar (or choose “Select” or “Snapshot” from the “Tools” --> “Basic” menu). You may then click and drag out a rectangular area you would like to copy. (In Acrobat 5.0, use the Graphics Select tool from the toolbar.) You can copy whole or partial pages onto your computer’s clipboard for pasting into other applications. The results will vary depending on the applications you paste into, as well as the resolution of the PDF view from which you are copying. Please note that this functionality is intended for nonprofessional uses, such as illustrating a homework project — for commercial or institutional projects it is necessary to request a license to republish Octavo content.

Printing
Because Octavo Editions contain large amounts of digital information, printing can take a significant length of time. When possible, print in black and white for faster results. Octavo content is subject to copyright restrictions, and permission must be requested for commercial or institutional use.
